SEND Parent/Carer Information Session |
Our focus this year is on communication and independence, helping our children to become independent citizens.
For our pupils with ASD, this will take the form of several lessons that place PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System) at the heart of everything we do. Each week, we will have music lessons, cooking lessons, PE and art lessons that provide children with structured opportunities to make picture exchanges in.
During these sessions, we will also be focusing on increasing the children’s independence. This will mean that adults will be working hard to ensure they are using the right amount of prompting and fading so that the children get the right amount of support whilst not being overly reliant on it.
Our pupils with PMLD will be continuing to work on switchwork and sensory stories. This means providing them with plenty of opportunity to practice using switches in a variety of contexts – from computer games, to interactive stories, loading phrases to say "good morning" and operating switch activated toys. Further time operating machines in the sensory room will also be provided.
Work on sensory stories will provide opportunities for the children to further engage in Literacy objectives whilst giving them time to develop key skills such as choosing and anticipating events.
We incorporate themed topics for each term, which allow the children to work on their targets in a range of new contexts.
