Meeting the Philosophy Man

On Thursday, we attended a Zoom meeting with ‘The Philosophy Man’.  We thought about some big questions relating to what freedom is. He talked about Odysseus and his journey to the land of the sirens. In the story Odysseus sails past the sirens, whose singing lures sailors to their deaths. He plugs his crew’s ears with beeswax and has himself tied to the mast so he can hear the song without steering the ship toward danger. They pass safely but one of his men takes the beeswax out of his ears after he sees Odysseus’s face transforming after he hears the sirens and he dives into the sea. I found this interesting because even though they had instructions to not take the beeswax out, the rower went against that.
