  • Diversity Day at SJH 2023

    Fri 20 Oct 2023

As part of Diversity Day, we were looking at the Newham Migration Story and exploring why Newham is the most ethnically diverse area in the UK (possibly the world). As a tribute to this day, we came into school wearing clothing that represents our home culture.

  • Carnival Story (EYFS), Mask Making Workshops (KS1) and Drumming Workshops (KS2)

    Fri 20 Oct 2023

As part of Black History Month, we've been immersed in additional workshops to enrich our learning at school. EYFS have taken part in a carnival story, while KS1 have been busy making African masks. KS2 have had a fantastic workshop on African drumming.

  • Thursday Together in Reception

    Thu 12 Oct 2023

We had our first 'Thursday Together' session in Reception earlier today. It was wonderful to welcome so many parents/carers to our school! The focus of today's session was 'Fine-motor skills'; parents/carers first attended a session led by Ms Shah about the important of developing fine-motor skills in the Early Years, before they joined their children in class. Here, the children and their parents/carers joined in activities such as using tweezers to pick up water beads, tracing, threading pasta, making a play dough family, finger painting, and many more.

Some parents commented after the session:

'I like the idea of Red class mixing with Blue class, it gives my child the confidence to meet other children. Amazing outdoor play area!'

'It was nice to have information beforehand of what to expect. It was good to join in with the activities.'

'It's a very good idea to host such days for parents. I saw what great success my child has already achieved.'

'Thursday Together' will take place once a half term; keep checking the website for more information regarding dates!

  • Year 3 & 4 Maths Open Lesson

    Wed 11 Oct 2023

This morning we had a fantastic turn out for our maths open lessons in LKS2. Similarly to KS1, parents/carers had the opportunity to see and experience how we are taught, using the CPA approach (Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract). Some parents shared their experience after the lessons:

"I am really happy to have joined the maths lesson. It was very helpful to use when helping my child with homework."

"It was impressive to see how the learning takes place; it was not only maths taught, but encouraging children to interact with one another, use body language and socialising skills. Thank you!"

  • Black History Month in Year 6

    Tue 10 Oct 2023

As part of celebrating Black History Month, the pupils in year 6 have linked their art topic 'Cityscapes' with learning about Stephen Wiltshire. Stephen was born in London to West Indian parents on 24th April, 1974. As a child he was mute, and did not relate to other people. Aged three, he was diagnosed as autistic. He had no language and lived entirely in his own world. Stephen, who was always very much drawn to art, is now an outstanding artist, who has produced a number of masterful cityscape drawings. The pupils in year 6 made use of the current glorious weather to create factual posters about this exceptional artist.

  • Year 1 & 2 Maths Open Lesson

    Mon 09 Oct 2023

This morning we had a fantastic turn out for our maths open lessons in KS1. Our parents/carers were welcomed into our maths lessons, where they could see and experience first hand how we are taught, using the CPA approach (Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract). We enjoyed sharing our learning with our parents/carers and they were able to take helpful ideas away so they can continue to support us at home.
