  • Pop Up and Play at SJH!

    Tue 21 Nov 2023

Our Pop Up and Play sessions are crucial for the early development and socialisation of babies ages 12 months to 18 months. These group activities provide a structured and stimulating environment where infants can engage with their peers, fostering crucial social skills from an early age. Interactions with other babies stimulate sensory and cognitive development. These sessions also offer parents the opportunity to share experiences, parenting tips, and emotional support, creating a sense of community. Additionally, exposure to different stimuli and activities in these sessions can contribute to the overall well-being of the baby, promoting curiosity, exploration, and a positive attitude towards learning. Participating in our Pop Up and Play sessions establishes a foundation for healthy social and emotional development, laying the groundwork for future relationships and interactions.

  • Children in Need at SJH

    Fri 17 Nov 2023

Today pupils took part in Children in Need and came to school dressed in yellow. Children in Need is a charitable event that brings schools together to support and raise funds for children facing various challenges. It's a day filled with compassion and camaraderie as students and teachers alike come together to make a positive impact.

  • Remembrance Day

    Fri 10 Nov 2023

For Remembrance day this year, a ceremony was held at Manor Park Library and we were very fortunate to be invited as it is a very special occasion that has not been held locally for many years. Four of our wonderful prefects represented Sir John Heron Primary School at this event, in which it was our role to close the ceremony. Our children confidently delivered ‘The Act of Remembrance’ which was followed by a 2 minutes silence to remember all the soldiers who bravely fought in WW1 and WW2. We also read ‘The Kohima Epitaph’ after the whistle was blown, which signified the end of the 2 minutes silence. The ceremony was organised by Leslie Solomon, a passionate local resident, and in attendance were also the community neighbourhood officers and MP Stephen Timms. Our school was also presented with a certificate of appreciation and we were also able to place wooden sticks representing different faiths amongst the poppies to show the diversity of cultures and religions present in our local community.

  • Year 2 Visit St Michael and All Angels Church

    Tue 07 Nov 2023

Today Year 2 visited St Michael and All Angels Church in Manor Park. Children met Father Lee who is a priest at the Church. Father Lee was very impressed by the children’s knowledge and understanding of the parables they had learned in RE. Children were able to recall the parables of ‘The Lost Sheep’, ‘The Good Samaritan’ and ‘The Wise and Foolish Builders’. Father Lee then continued by talking through the Christmas story and discussed the importance of Jesus to Christians. He also talked through the nativity and is very excited to come and see Year 2 perform this at the end of the term. Children then had the opportunity to ask questions they were very curious about. We found out that there was a likely possibility that Jesus was 33 years old when he was crucified on the cross.

  • Prefects lead assembly on Armistice Day

    Mon 06 Nov 2023

Earlier today, some of our prefects led their first KS2 assembly. They talked about the significance of Armistice Day; a day for remembering the millions upon millions of soldiers and civilians killed during the First World War. It was delightful to see how they made use of skills from the Oracy framework such as making eye contact with the audience, adapting the tone of their voice and using precise language.

  • Swimming at the London Aquatics Centre!

    Thu 02 Nov 2023

This week, pupils in year 6 have embarked on a 2-week block of swimming lessons at the marvellous Aquatics Centre in Stratford, home to the 2012 London Olympic Games. Here is what Amrin in Silver class had to say about the sessions:

What I have learnt about swimming is that at first for me it was hard and I was nervous and I thought I was going to drown, but actually I managed to do it.  It was really tough at first but I managed to get through my fears. Some people think it is really easy but actually a lot of them have managed to now see how hard it is for others’.

Year 6 will conclude their swimming lessons on Friday 10th November. Until then, best of luck to our fabulous Risk Taking Heroes!
