  • World Book Day - 5th March 2020

    Mon 24 Feb 2020

Thursday 5th March is World Book Day!

It’s a day to celebrate authors, illustrators, books and (most importantly) it’s a celebration of reading. In fact, it’s the biggest celebration of its kind, designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and marked in over 100 countries all over the world.

As part of our celebrations, children are invited to come to school dressed as a character from a book. You could come dressed as someone from a classic novel, such as Oliver Twist, or come as someone from a more recent book. There are endless possibilities, and we are sure that you will have lots of ideas. If you can, bring a copy of the book that your character comes from.

  • KS2 Reading Cafe

    Fri 14 Feb 2020

    Reading Cafe - 13th February

This week, KS2 parents/carers were invited to Sir John Heron's first ever 'Reading Cafe', where they had the chance to participate in reading related activities in class, whilst enjoying fruit, cheese and crackers.

To start off, parents/carers met staff in the hall for a taste of what the skill of 'inference' looks like in a typical reading lesson. They then had a go at discussing the characteristics of Hannah in the book 'Gorilla' by Anthony Browne. After this, parents/carers joined their children in class, and put some of these skills into practice.

  • Safer Internet Day at school

    Wed 12 Feb 2020

On February 11th, Sir John Heron took part in Safer Internet Day. Every year group was given a different task to complete to promote E-Safety. The children had to think of different scenarios and represent them using various online design apps like Book Creator, Cartoon That, or Adobe Spark. The emphasis for the children was to make child-friendly resources that would teach other children ways of staying safe online. They looked at various scenarios like cyber-bullying, fraud, and private information and learnt the four steps on how to report inappropriate behaviour online by saving any evidence, blocking the person, logging off the website, and talking to a trusted adult. Children also learnt about these steps in assembly. Parents/ carers also attended an E-Safety workshop where they learnt about how to keep children safe online. Have a look at the pictures of the day in school.

  • SJH Times Table Champion

Congratulations to Sara in Nightingale Class who won the Times Table Knockout Challenge to become the very first Sir John Heron Times Table Champion. She was presented by Mr Kundu with the Times Table Champion Trophy. She had tough competition from across the school with everyone recalling their multiplication tables with lightning speed! But the number of contestants narrowed after each round until Sara took top spot. Well done Sara!

  • NSPCC Number Day

    Fri 07 Feb 2020

We had a fabulous day celebrating Number Day and raising money for the NSPCC. Everyone dressed up for non-school uniform day and wore an item of clothing with a number on it. Maths lessons across the school were dedicated to Number Day. For example, in Year 2, children had to fill a flower bed by covering the board with just one type of flower, using Numicon shapes. We also had a special number assembly where teachers and children competed in a head-to-head times table challenge.

We raised £270.79 for the NSPCC
