  • The Great Fire of London brought to life!

    Fri 26 Jan 2024

In history, the pupils in Year 2 have been learning about ‘The Great Fire of London’, which started on 2nd September 1666. It started in Thomas Farriner’s Bakery on Pudding Lane and it lasted for 5 days. There was no Fire Service at the time. To bring history to life, we designed and made our own Tudor houses. We used recyclable materials like cereal boxes and tissue boxes. We painted and used coloured paper to decorate the houses in Tudor style. We lined up the houses in our playground to create the narrow streets just like those in Pudding Lane back in 1666. We requested that Thomas Farriner’s bakery be the first to be set alight, mirroring the events which unfolded during the fateful night on 2nd September 1666. We were all feeling very anxious about what was about to happen but also thought about all the people who lost their homes, property and family members in the Great Fire. It was very devastating to watch our houses go up in flames and burn down into ashes. The speed at which the fire spread was impressive!

A big thank you to Mr Riz, who is our site supervisor and one of our fire wardens for having special equipment to extinguish the fire and putting it out completely to ensure we were all safe. It was a memorable lesson indeed!

  • Back to the Victorian times

    Tue 16 Jan 2024

Last week, the pupils and staff in year 6 travelled back to the Victorian times, which linked with the book they are currently reading; ‘Street Child’ . The book is based on a real life character from history, Jim Jarvis and his life as a destitute orphan under the reign of Queen Victoria. The immersive experience didn’t just benefit pupils' writing so that they could empathise with some of the experiences of the children in the Victorian era, but they also did Victorian Maths, P.E., Reading and Oracy! What a memorable day!
