Sir John Heron Primary School

Together we learn. Together we achieve.

Year 1

Welcome to the Green and Orange Class Page!

2025-26

Materials (Science) - W/B 29.06.26

This week in science we looked at common objects in our classroom and named them. We used our identifying and classifying skills to tell the difference between an object and its material. We went on a material hunt around the school and identified different objects, spoke about what material they are made of and discussed if this object could be made from a different material and why. We also looked at the properties of these materials and explained why it is the best material for the objects.

Learning About What Makes Us Special (RE) - W/B 15.06.26

This week, we read a story called ‘But Martin!’ By June Counsel. This story showed us that everyone is different, unique and special in their own way. We looked at what makes us special and discussed what we can do to help someone feel special. We then drew a picture of ourselves and all the things that contribute to making us feel special, for example, our special clothes, features and celebration!

Exploring Numbers between 50 and 100  (Mathematics) - W/B 08.06.26

This week in mathematics, we participated in an extremely fun and immersive lesson! We focused on our numbers 50 - 100 through a carousel of activities. We used our fingers to practice writing two-digit numbers in flour and used lollysticks to write two-digit numbers in foam! We found the biggest number out of two options and used Place Value Penguin to help us build numbers using tens and ones manipulatives. We can’t wait to look back on this learning to help us with our place value unit!

Emily Brown and the Thing (English) - W/B 01.06.26

During English, we took part in an immersive learning experience where children stepped into the adventure of ‘Emily Brown and the Thing’. They shared their cuddly blankets or toys and discussed why it is comforting or special to them. They then created their own cuddly blankets. They created a class collage of the ‘Thing’ using different types of materials and colours to bring their imagination to life. They also experimented creating a green medication and discussed why medicine is important. Lastly, children completed an obstacle course where they managed to win back the milk carton. In the end, children shared their predictions about what the story would be about.
