Sir John Heron Primary School

Together we learn. Together we achieve.

Year 2

Welcome to the Yellow and Purple class page!

2025-26

Fieldwork (Geography) - W/B 29.06.26

As part of our geography unit, Manor Park and Bangladesh, children in year 2 went on a local walk along Romford Road to identify Bangladeshi influences within their local area, Manor Park. They recorded their observations using tally charts and identified whether they saw Bangladeshi flags, shops, restaurants, people speaking Bengali and other signs of Bangladeshi culture. This fieldwork helped the children develop their observational skills and gain a deeper understanding of the diverse community in which they live.

Poetry - W/B 22.06.26

In year 2, we have begun exploring our new reading unit through poetry. We discussed what poetry is and why authors write poems, before revisiting some of the features we already know, such as descriptive language, rhythm and imagery. Together, we read a diamante poem and carefully examined its structure and layout, identifying the features that make this style of poem unique.

As part of our reading, we annotated the poem and discussed the words and phrases that helped us create pictures in our minds. We then drew illustrations inspired by the images and ideas from the poem, helping us to deepen our understanding and develop our visualisation skills as readers.

Forgiveness (RE) - W/B 15.06.26

This week, we started our new RE topic on forgiveness and what it means to say sorry. We began with a class discussion about what the words “sorry” and “forgiveness” mean to us. We then read a story about forgiveness and, as a table group, ranked the different messages from the story based on how important we felt they were, discussing our reasons together. After this, we began linking forgiveness to religion by sharing our prior knowledge of different religious beliefs about forgiveness and saying sorry. Finally, we explored our own ideas about forgiveness and, using the dartboard activity again, discussed what we think is the most important way to show forgiveness and why.

Exploring Fractions (Mathematics) - W/B 08.06.26

In our mathematics immersion lesson, children in year 2 took part in a range of engaging and exciting carousel activities to introduce their new topic: Fractions. They explored fractions practically by using playdough to create thirds, quarters and sixths and used Lego blocks to demonstrate equal parts. The children also made fraction strips to represent both unit and non-unit fractions and enjoyed playing a pizza fractions snap game to reinforce their understanding. These hands-on activities helped the children develop their understanding of fractions in a fun and interactive way.

The Day the Crayons Quit (English) - W/B 01.06.26

This week, the children in year 2 were introduced to their new class book, ‘The Day the Crayons Quit’ by Drew Daywalt. The children started by exploring the front cover and making predictions about what the story might be about.

To begin our learning, the children took part in a colouring activity, only to discover that all the colouring pencils had disappeared! They did their best using ordinary pencils instead and reflected on the difference this made to their work. Later, the children discovered a map and embarked on a treasure hunt in the school playground. At each ‘X’ on the map, they found a note from the crayons explaining how they felt and where they had gone- and at the final ‘X’, they discovered the missing crayons! The activity sparked lots of excitement and curiosity, and the children were eager to find out more.

We are looking forward to reading the story together and discovering what happens next!
