Sir John Heron Primary School

Together we learn. Together we achieve.

Year 6

Welcome to the Silver and Bronze Class page!

2025-26

Let's Go Fly a Kite! (DT and Science) - W/B 06.07.26

Our final D&T topic has been kites, for which we designed and constructed our own kite. But we also thought about the science involved in the flying of kites, and how the forces of lift and drag affect the performance of a kite. To see these forces in action, after we had built our kites, we held a Year 6 Kite Festival. Most of our kites flew successfully, if only for a short time. Some, however, soared higher and for longer, so the designs for these kites balanced the forces better. The whole topic has been interesting and fun!

Programming (Computing) - W/B 29.06.26

In computing, we have been exploring how to program a micro:bit. Using blocks of code, we have been able to determine what output will happen depending on a given input. We noticed how similar the blocks of code are to those we have previously used in Scratch.

The Highwayman (Reading) - W/B 22.06.26

In our English lessons this week, we have read through the poem ‘The Highwayman’, by Alfred Noyes. We began by making sure we all understood what a highwayman was, and when they were around. Then we read the poem, which tells the story of the Highwayman and Bess, the love of his life. Unfortunately the Highwayman has a jealous rival, and events take a sad turn.

Part of our reading was to consider how best to read the poem out loud, which got us thinking about our oracy skills.

Celebrations (RE) - W/B 15.06.26

Our RE topic this term is to do with celebrations. We started by thinking about celebrations in general: what makes something a celebration, things that celebrations have in common, and whether celebrations always have to be happy. After thinking about elements that a celebration could have, we used a diamond arrangement to show which we thought were very important, and which were less so.

Real-life Word Problems (Mathematics) - W/B 08.06.26

In year 6, we have been working collaboratively on a range of problems set in a real-life context. Having made sure we understood the context, we used the given information to answer a series of questions. To extend our thinking, we had to show our answers using calculations, visual representations, and an explanation of our methods and reasoning.

Improving our Writing (English) - W/B 01.06.26

In Year 6 we are continuing to work hard to improve pieces of writing from earlier in the year. One of the ways we do this is through peer-assessing. A partner reads our writing, then gives feedback about how we could make improvements to what we have done. It’s a really helpful way to raise the quality of our writing, and increase engagement with the reader.
