Reading - W/B 28.09.26

Year 5 have been thoroughly enjoying reading The House with Chicken Legs by Sophie Anderson. The children have been captivated by the magical world of Marinka and her extraordinary home, and have been eager to find out what happens next. Throughout the story, they have developed their reading skills by exploring rich vocabulary, making thoughtful predictions, drawing inferences and discussing characters’ feelings, motivations and choices. The children have also enjoyed exploring the novel’s important themes, including friendship, family, belonging, courage and growing up. It has been wonderful to see their enthusiasm for the story, with many children sharing their ideas, opinions and favourite moments during our reading sessions.

Place Value (Mathematics) - W/B 21.09.26

This week, pupils in year 5 have been developing their understanding of place value and the value of digits within numbers. We used Gattegno charts and place value mats to help us see how numbers are built and how each digit changes in value depending on its position. The children worked practically with place value counters representing 1, 10, 100 and 1000s, building different numbers and explaining the value of each digit.

Persuasive Writing (English) - W/B 14.09.26

In year 5, children explored how to advertise a property using persuasive language features. They had a go at convincing potential buyers to purchase a range of unusual and magical properties, including a mysterious wizard’s tower, a house with frog legs and even Hansel and Gretel’s gingerbread house, despite its many quirky features! The children used persuasive vocabulary, powerful adjectives and rhetorical questions to highlight the unique benefits of each property and persuaded their audience that these unusual homes were the perfect place to live.

Welcome Back! - W/B 07.09.26

Children in year 5 have settled into their new routines really well and have really got stuck into their learning, approaching each task with enthusiasm and curiosity. We have introduced our new topics with a range of immersive activities to bring their learning to life. In English, the children have begun exploring our new book, ‘The House with Chicken Legs’ and used their creativity to design their own mythical houses, thinking carefully about their features and atmosphere. In mathematics, the children took part in a carousel of practical activities focused on place value, exploring numbers, partitioning and the value of different digits. It has been wonderful to see their enthusiasm, creativity and positive attitudes towards their learning so far. We are looking forward to all the exciting learning and experiences still to come!

Animals including Humans (Science) - W/B 06.07.26

In our final science lesson, we consolidated our learning about ‘Animals including humans.’ We made leaflets about the topic, summarising; gestation period, human life cycle and growth. We also played a kahoot to recall our knowledge.

Coding (Computing) - W/B 29.06.26

In Computing, we have been exploring our topic ‘selection of quizzes’. We have been looking and modifying code and what it means by selection and condition. This lesson, for our own game (which we will code) we had to create a video game front cover.

Greek Myths and Legends (Reading) - W/B 22.06.26

This term, we have been reading Greek myths and legends. The one that we enjoyed the most was about the Minotaur. We read the story in the form of a poem, which was really fascinating. Later in the week, we even acted out a scene from the story.

Humanism (RE) - W/B 15.06.26

Today we had a delightful visit from Ruth, who spoke to us about her perspective about thankfulness as a Humanist. To understand the concept of being thankful, Ruth explored the topic through personal experiences. As a class, we learned that humanists believe that good things happen through: other people helping us, luck or chance, wider communities designed by people who are helping, our own efforts and natural laws.

Multiplying decimal numbers by 10, 100 and 1000 (Mathematics) - W/B 08.06.26

In today’s lesson, we had to multiply decimals by 10, 100 and 1,000. We knew to look at the number you are multiplying by to find out how many times each digit becomes bigger (10 times, 100 times or 1,000 times). We know that we must keep the decimal point fixed in its own column. Then, we move all the digits to the left by the number of places you counted in step 1. Finally, remember to fill any empty columns with a place holder, 0.

Goodnight  Mr Tom (English) - W/B 01.06.26 

This week in year 5, we had an immersive lesson on our new book, ‘Goodnight, Mr Tom.’ It was really interesting recapping the Blitz and then making our own evacuation tags and gas mask. We even recreated the atmosphere of being on the train to the countryside!
