Girls Tag Rugby Competition with Tapscott Sports Hub Schools
Mon 10 Nov 2025We are delighted to announce that the year 5 and 6 girls tag rugby team competed against 3 other school and came in first place, bringing the cup back to school! We are so proud of their achievement, resilience and hard work. Well done!

French Story Telling in Lower Key Stage Two
Tue 04 Nov 2025The chidlren in Lower Key Stage Two were treated to a French storytelling workshop today, where pupils were told the story of ‘Goldilocks’ as well as the ‘Three Little Pigs’. During the workshop, the speaker told the stories in both English and French, having the children repeat some of the French words/phrases back to her, to help them practice. This was a great experience for year 3 and 4!

Celebrating Diversity Day
Fri 24 Oct 2025At Sir John Heron Primary School, we celebrated Diversity Day with enthusiasm and pride. Each class focused on a different country, exploring its unique culture, food, language, music, and art. The classrooms came alive with colourful displays, traditional costumes, and exciting activities that reflected the richness of our global community. Children also had the opportunity to share key information about their own cultures, helping everyone appreciate the many backgrounds that make our school so special. It was a joyful day filled with learning, respect, and celebration of our wonderful diversity.

SJH gains Thinking School Accreditation from the University of Exeter
Fri 24 Oct 2025We are delighted to announce that Sir John Heron Primary School has been awarded Thinking School status by the University of Exeter!
Since beginning our journey in the summer of 2023, we have worked hard to create a culture where ‘thinking serves as a golden thread throughout daily school life.’ This achievement reflects the dedication of our pupils, staff, parents, and governors, all of whom have embraced the Thinking School approach.
We are very proud of this recognition and look forward to continuing to develop and embed our work on thinking skills and tools across the school.

Family Friday in Reception- Fine Motor Skills!
Fri 24 Oct 2025We hosted our first Family Friday of this academic year in Reception today and the focus was fine motor skills. We had a fantastic turn out, which reflects the positive parental engagement in the early years. Parents were able to find out how they can continue to support their children at home with developing their fine motor skills. They were able to see and experience first hand the activities in our Reception classrooms and engage with this alongside their child.

Girls Football Festival- Our SJH Girls did us Proud!
Fri 17 Oct 2025The girls football team played three games against Selwyn and Park Primary. They won two games and tied one game. They worked hard as a team to score goals, passing the ball in a strategic way whilst defending the opposing team. Their collaboration throughout the matches really shone through and we are incredibly proud of them. Well done to our lionesses!

LEGO workshop with the British Science Assosiation
Thu 16 Oct 2025This week, we were delighted to welcome representatives from the British Science Association, who visited our ECO Warriors to explore children’s perceptions and feelings about nature. During the workshop, pupils expressed their ideas through thoughtful discussions and creative drawings, showcasing their curiosity and appreciation for the natural world. It was a valuable opportunity for our children to share their enthusiasm and deepen their connection with environmental themes. We look forward to our next workshop, where we will continue to build on these ideas and explore them in greater depth using Lego!

Reception Open Day for 2026 Starters
Wed 15 Oct 2025We opened our doors to new families and hosted our Reception Open Day today. A number of new families attended and showed an interest in joining the Sir John Heron community in Reception 2026. Families engaged in an information meeting, followed by exploring our Reception provision first hand, with all our Reception staff present. Parents/carers had the opportunity to have any questions answered.

Year 4 Visits Sri Murugan Temple
Tue 14 Oct 2025Earlier this week, the year 4 children visited Sri Murugan Temple in Manor Park to learn more about how HIndus worship in a temple. They were guided by the temple priest, who told them about the importance of the five elements in Hinduism and why Hindus worship at a temple. The children also learnt about the different deities and rituals that Hindus believe in. This visit allowed the children to make links to their learning in class and they were curious about their learning, which led to them asking questions about worshipping in a temple.

Year 1 Visit St Michael's Church to Learn about Baptism
Fri 10 Oct 2025Year 1 had a visit to St Michael's Church, where they learnt about baptism. The priest talked through a baptism ceremony, which welcomes a baby into the Christian family. Pupils also learnt about the symbolism of water and the sign of the cross.
