Ark Farm at Sir John Heron!
Fri 18 Mar 2022It has been a spectacular day at SJH today, not only because we have been dressed in red for Red Nose Day, but because we have also had the lovely Ark Farm in our school. Children have had the opportunity to look at and pet the animals (rabbits, guinea pigs, tortoise, sheep, lamb, donkey, goats and owl). We also had our toddler friends join us from our Stay and Play sessions, as well as new toddlers for this special session.

Year 6 Lamb Heart Dissection
Tue 15 Mar 2022During Science today, we were dissecting a lamb heart. First, we put on aprons and vinyl gloves to protect our hands and clothes from the bacteria in the hearts. Secondly, we read a risk assessment and followed it. We started by observing the heart and using adjectives to describe what we saw. After observing the heart, we picked up the heart and described what we felt. Surprisingly, it was quite lighter than I expected it to be. We cut the front side of the heart through the middle and inspected the heart and labelled the inner parts. We all took turns to cut different parts we thought that would make an interesting result. Remarkably, the heart was pretty similar throughout. I enjoyed this lesson because it was something new and interesting that we haven’t done before ; I would like to do this again with a different body part or maybe an animal. I would give this whole experience a 7/10 as it had some ups and some downs and some parts were quite messy and disgusting but it was a great experience and was memorable.

Active Citizens
Wed 09 Mar 2022At Sir John Heron we care about our planet. Therefore, Tanni Grey Class kicked off our new weekly litter pick activity as part of the 'SJH Fit4life' initiative. Armed with litter pickers, bin bags and gloves, we took to the streets in our local area and collected 14 bags of litter! We were shocked to find so much rubbish in our local area. The litter pick initiative will carry on weekly throughout the spring and summer terms, and KS2 will make their contribution to being active citizens in Manor Park.
