Year 5 and 6 WRAP workshops

Classes in Year 5 and Year 6 had a visitor attend school to complete some WRAP (Workshop to Raise Awareness of Prevent) workshops with the them. They learnt about the Prevent strategy and different forms extremism can take. They also learnt about recognising the signs of someone trying to radicalise others and what to do to keep themselves safe if they are ever concerned about this happening to them.

Anti- Bullying week

Anti-Bullying Week 2019 is happening from Monday 11th November - Friday 15th November 2019 and it has the theme 'Change Starts With Us'.

At Sir John Heron we are passionate about ensuring that our school remains a bully free zone and to show our commitment to this and as part of our PSHCE focus term thinking about our wellbeing, our Anti-Bullying Ambassadors would like to let you know what will be going on in school next week:

Monday: Special Assembly

The Anti-Bullying Ambassadors will lead an assembly to all of the children to let them know about Anti-Bullying week and remind them of our school approach to dealing with bullying incidents.

Monday- Thursday: Poster competition

Design and create a poster which celebrates friendship and kindness, and uses the quote ‘Change starts with us’ or which gives guidance on what to do if you think that you’re being bullied. Posters need to be given to Miss Werrin by 9.00 on Thursday 14th November and the winner in each year will be announced in assembly on Friday 15th November. Look out for the winning designs on the Anti-Bullying Ambassador page of the school website!

Friday- Children in Need fundraising day

From coast to coast, in towns and cities right across the UK, BBC Children in Need is out there making a difference. The amazing projects we support help change the lives of disadvantaged children and young people all over the country. Come in to school in your own clothes on Friday (ideally wearing something yellow- the colour to symbolise friendship), bring £1 and we’ll donate the efforts of our fundraising to this great cause.

All week: The Positivity Postbox

Send a thank you letter to someone in school who has done something positive for you and the Anti-Bullying Ambassadors will deliver your note of gratitude to them. Deliveries will happen each afternoon.

All week: Storytelling

The Anti-Bullying Ambassadors will be dropping in to classes across school to share stories that have picked with the theme of tolerance and friendship.

UEL School Sports Event

On Wednesday 6th November 15 children from Year 5 attended the University of East London to take part in a school sports event. The aim of the day was to drive the aspiration of those involved to access Higher Education and an active lifestyle.
The children participated in different sessions such as athletics and football all facilitated by UEL elite sports scholars. The children also had an opportunity to question the elite sports scholars on a range of topics such as their university studies, future career choices and what it takes to become an elite athlete. To finish off the day we watched an inter varsity volleyball match and cheered UEL on to victory!

Year 5 and 6 Boys Tag Rugby Champions!

On Friday 1st November, our Boys Tag Rugby teams attended the Sports Tapscott Tag Rugby competition at West Ham United Beckton. Our teams were placed in different groups and played five matches each.

After playing all of their games one of our teams finished as the overall champion with a record of four victories and one defeat!

Well done to all the squad for their determination and resilience both in their training sessions and in the competition itself, they truly are excellent role models for everyone at our school.

Award Winners - Outstanding Citizenship School 2019!

We are delighted to announce that Sir John Heron Primary School are the first ever winners of the Outstanding Citizenship School award! Our pupils were recognised for the work they did on making people more aware of homelessness and its causes. Children wrote to their local MP Stephen Timms and to the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan. In their letters they recommended that the school curriculum should include mental health and financial education in an attempt to prevent homelessness in the future. These are two areas that the Department for Education is now taking action on.

A representative from Year 4, Arya, accompanied Ms Bekker to the Palace of Westminster to receive the award at a prestigious ceremony attended by many notable figures including the Rt Hon. The Lord Blunkett. The ceremony was hosted by Pussycat Doll band member Kimberly Wyatt. After the ceremony all the guests were treated to an open top bus tour of London!

We are very proud of this award which recognises our commitment to enabling our students to be positive citizens both within the local community and beyond.

Talk for Change - For Jimmy

Margaret Mizen came to talk to Year 5 and 6 about what happened to her son Jimmy in 2008. Jimmy Mizen was killed in Lewisham on Saturday 10th May 2008 when a large glass dish was thrown at him which shattered and severed an artery in his neck. After, his parents set up the For Jimmy foundation which aims to share Jimmy's story and help young people make their local communities safer.

Margaret talked to the children about what had happened to Jimmy, shared a video of his life and talked about forgiveness. She also discussed the impact bullying can have on people and how anger can get out of control resulting in severe consequences. Finally, she talked about the importance of individual responsibility and the role we all play in making our communities a safer place. At the end of the session, there was a Q&A session where children had an opportunity to ask Margaret questions about what happened.

We thank Margaret for coming into school to share Jimmy's story.

With your support, we have raised £171.32 for this worthy cause, which provides specialist health care, information and financial support to people affected by cancer.
