  • Green Party!

    Tue 16 Jul 2019

On Monday 15th July, we had our Green Party for all the children who have had outstanding behaviour and stayed on Green for the entire year!

This year, the theme of the party was "The Greatest Showman". Children dressed up in their smart clothes, and a DJ came in to play all the tunes from the recent film, as well as some party classics like 'La Macarena' and 'Cotton Eye Joe'! We had so much fun dancing to the songs, eating delicious snacks and the DJ even sprayed a foam machine!

Well done to all the children this year who have stayed on Green and a big thank you to Mrs Baker for organising a wonderful party!

  • Summer Concert!

    Thu 11 Jul 2019

Well done to all the pupils that performed their musical skills in front of parents/carers this morning!

Thank you to all the parents/carers who came to watch our performance and support the children. The children have been working hard throughout the year to develop their musical talents, and it was wonderful to see them perform today!

  • Planetarium!

    Thu 11 Jul 2019

    Planetarium

In school we have been learning about 50 years of the moon landing. We have learnt about Neil Armstrong and his Apollo 11 mission. We have had many workshops, trips and visitors into school over the past 6 weeks. We thought it was only fair to finish the term with one of the best experiences of all. A planetarium show!!

This week we had the chance to have a planetarium experience. We watched shows about the sun, night sky and an astronaut. We got to learn about Space in a fun way and interactive way.

Here are some photos from our session and our thoughts:

Myla - ‘I enjoyed watching the sun and how we could blow the sun away it was funny.’

Unais - ‘I liked learning about Space. I know Neil Armstrong was the first man on the moon. I saw the sun. The sun is hot and is made of fire.’

Hana - ‘I loved it when the stars came out. It felt real.’

  • Year 3 Space Workshop

    Thu 11 Jul 2019

This term we have been celebrating the 50th anniversary of the famous Apollo 11 moon landing. We have been exploring the life of Neil Armstrong who was the first man on the moon. On Monday 1st July we took a trip to intergalactic space as we took part in an interactive workshop in the atrium. We discovered facts that were out of this world and even had a go at some role play during the session. We can’t wait to delve deeper into space to see the adventures that are yet to be uncovered!

  • KS1 visit to Barleylands

    Thu 11 Jul 2019

KS1 visited Barleylands Farm park on Wednesday 10th July.  Children got the opportunity see different types of reptiles in the huge Reptile House and awesome birds of prey where children were able to see the birds in action through the flying displays. Children raced around the indoor play area, and enjoyed the outdoor play areas especially bouncing on the jumping pillow. Each class explored the Discovery Barn where there were a variety of animals and took a ride on the Tractor Trailer. The children thoroughly enjoyed their day and so did the adults. We want to thank the parents who gave up their time to attend. Your support is greatly appreciated.

  • Year 6 Stubbers Visit

    Thu 11 Jul 2019

On the 5th July, Year 6 had an amazing end of year trip to Stubbers Activity Centre. Whilst we were there we had the opportunity to build rafts and play in the lake, try our hand at target shooting with rifles, complete team challenges and abseil!  We had to use communication and skills of persuasion, hand-eye coordination and be brave!  It was the perfect ending to not only our academic year, but our time at Sir John Heron, and gave us memories that we will treasure forever.

  • The Brilliant Club Graduation

    Wed 10 Jul 2019

On Monday 8th July, twelve Year 5 children travelled to Oxford for a very special event. They were the members of this year’s Brilliant Club, and the visit was for their graduation!

The Brilliant Club is a programme that places university researchers (PhD Tutors) in schools. who teach university-style tutorials to groups of six pupils. Many of these researchers are lecturers to students at university level, so it is a unique opportunity for children to experience university-style teaching. During the programme, pupils visit two leading universities, and at the end of the programme they complete a final assignment of 1,000 words which is marked and graded in the same way as a degree.

The launch trip was to Goldsmiths University, back in March, when the children were introduced to the programme and spent time with their tutor. Over the course of the next term, the tutor came into school and worked with the children on the topic “What is Fairness?” As well as having an hour’s tutorial each week, the children also had homework to complete, which all helped with the final assignment. At the end of June, the tutor came in for a final tutorial with the children, discussing their assignments and telling them their grades. Of course, all the children passed, and two even managed to achieve a first!

The graduation trip to Oxford was a fitting end to the programme. The morning was spent at St Anne’s college, where the children had a tour, and a mini-lecture from a member of the university staff. In the afternoon, we joined with other Newham schools for the graduation ceremony.

Everyone was very proud of their achievements, and glad that they had put in so much hard work during the programme. Well done Brilliant Club!

  • Summer Fayre

    Wed 10 Jul 2019

Thank you to everyone who came along to our Summer Fayre on Wednesday 3rd July!

There were lots of exciting activities taking place, including our tombola, penalty shoot-out competition, archery challenge and face painting! Our refreshment stalls were extremely popular and we hope you enjoyed the popcorn, candy floss and snow cones!

Thank you to everyone who came to the fayre and those who donated items for sale! We are pleased to say that the school raised £560.30 from the fayre which will be put towards new school resources.

  • Final Day at Gilwell Park

    Fri 28 Jun 2019

It's our final day at Gilwell Park and we can't believe how quickly the time has gone!

We spent our final night celebrating around the campfire and cheering for the Lionesses in their match against Norway.

Today we are looking forward to our final water activity and seeing our families again!

Here are some photos from our adventures yesterday.

  • Gilwell Park Day Two

    Thu 27 Jun 2019

Today we have had a wonderful time taking part in group challenges to build our resilience and team work skills!

Our first activity was an orienteering challenge. We needed to use our map reading and grid reference skills to find various points to complete the activity.

Our second activity was a high ropes crate building challenge. We worked together to build a tower whilst on the high rope course. We needed determination and resilience skills to overcome our fear and work together to complete the challenge.

We are looking forward to this evening where we will enjoy celebrating our adventures so far around the campfire.

Our teachers are extremely proud of us and are pleased with how well we are behaving and looking after each other; the children are a credit to the school and their parents/carers.

    (Pictures to follow).
