Red Nose Day
Fri 21 Mar 2025We are pleased to inform you about our recent Red Nose Day celebrations at SJH, where pupils participated enthusiastically by wearing red and engaging in various Red Nose Day activities to support vulnerable children. Thanks to your support, we successfully raised a significant amount of money; £882.94 that will contribute to improving the lives of many children in need. Your encouragement played a crucial role in fostering a sense of community and compassion among our pupils, and we are grateful for your involvement in making Red Nose Day a memorable event.

Year 5 Visits the Science Museum
Fri 21 Mar 2025Earlier this week, Year 5 students embarked on an exciting visit to the Science Museum! The highlight of their visit was the ‘Exploring Space’ exhibition, where they marveled at life-sized artifacts from space exploration. From rockets and satellites to landers, the exhibition showcased groundbreaking scientific and technological advancements. A particularly unforgettable sight was the full-sized replica of the Eagle, the lander that carried astronauts Aldrin and Armstrong to the Moon! It was an unforgettable journey through the wonders of space exploration!

Year 4 Visits Manor Park Christian Centre
Fri 21 Mar 2025This week Year 4 visited Manor Park Christian Centre to learn about the importance of Easter to Christians. They had various workshops throughout the morning that linked to learning about Easter. There were six different workshops: stained glass painting, Easter garden, drama, singing and banner making. Groups of children took part in two workshops and then shared what they had learnt in a show and tell session at the end of the visit. The children had a fantastic time in all of the workshops! They are now equipped to link what they have learnt from the visit to our RE Day session, which is all about Easter.

Coffee Morning-Reading
Thu 20 Mar 2025This morning, we hosted a Reading Coffee Morning focused on effective strategies to support children's comprehension. Parents and caregivers discussed ways to enhance their child's understanding of texts while enjoying coffee and conversation. The session covered the importance of reading comprehension for academic success and daily life, along with practical strategies to use before, during, and after reading, such as making predictions, asking questions, and summarising key themes. An interactive demonstration by our Prefects allowed parents/carers to practice questioning techniques with a short passage, reinforcing comprehension skills. This was followed by a Q&A session where parents shared their experiences, challenges, and useful strategies. Thank you to everyone who joined us—we hope you found the session valuable and look forward to continuing these discussions in the future!

World Book Day 2025
Fri 07 Mar 2025On Thursday, 6th March 2025, children celebrated World Book Day with excitement, dressing up as their favourite heroes and villains from books. Throughout the day, they enjoyed various reading activities, while Year 1 and 2 had a special visit to the library. All pupils took part in an a World Book Day assembly, and parents were invited to join their children at school for a special reading session, making it a memorable day for everyone.

Choir Club and Singing workshops
Tue 04 Mar 2025We are excited to announce the launch of our new Choir Club, along with engaging singing workshops for children in Reception to Year 5! These workshops will provide a fun and interactive way for pupils to explore their musical talents and develop their singing skills. Today Year 3 pupils had their very first singing workshop, where they will learn new songs, vocal techniques, and gain confidence in their musical abilities. We look forward to seeing our young singers grow and enjoy the joy of music together!

Year 5 Sails the Thames!
Mon 03 Mar 2025This week, year 5 went on an exhilarating experience on the Uber Thames Clipper Boat from Woolwich to Canary Wharf. Whilst we were on the boat, some of us experienced the force of buoyancy for the first time. As we were sailing across the Thames, we noticed how air resistance and water resistance had an impact on how smooth the journey was as it certainly was a bumpy ride! We also had a glimpse of some lovely landmarks in London: The Gherkin, The Shard and Greenwich University. To finish off our day, we had lunch at the sky roof garden in Canary Wharf and explored the botany of Asia and Europe.

Meet a Musician
Tue 25 Feb 2025Earlier today, musicians from the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Peter Mallinson and Shirley Turner, paid a visit to Year 4 pupils, offering them a fascinating introduction to the four elements of music: beat, melody, harmony and silence. Through a selection of beautiful pieces, including some composed by Mozart, the duo performed on their violin and viola, captivating both the children and staff alike. It was a memorable and enriching experience, one that will be cherished for a long time!

Family Friday - Healthy Living
Fri 14 Feb 2025Today we hosted another successful Family Friday with a healthy living theme. The teaches did a fantastic job of planning and creating an interactive provision for our children to explore with their families. They were making fruit kebabs, tasting different healthy food, becoming dentists, making Supertato and much more. It was a successful morning with lots of family members joining us. We really do believe in our school motto that: Together we learn. Together we achieve.

Science Fair at Little Ilford School
Thu 13 Feb 2025Sir John Heron participated in Little Ilford's Science Fair for the first time and we absolutely loved it! Our contribution to the fair was made by our Spectacular Science Club and we chose 'Space' as our theme. We made: dioramas of the solar system, a 3D poster of Katherine Johnson, a replica of NASA's space station, a 3D model of a rocket and we made balloon rockets! A few children were chosen to represent our school for the day and they did a tremendous job explaining and demonstrating how to conduct the balloon rocket experiment.
