• Year 4 Conducts Fieldwork at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park

  In geography, the pupils in year 4 have started the topic of Earthquakes and Tsunamis. This week, they visited the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford to conduct their fieldwork. The children’s enquiry question was: What safety measures could be put into place in the event of an earthquake?

  The children had to make observations of the potential risks that there are in Stratford, if an earthquake occurred. They also had to identify what safety measures that they should put into place in order to minimise the risk. They all were thinking like geographers and were able to come up with great safety measures!

• Year 4 Sharing Assembly

  In this term’s sharing assembly, the year 4 children showcased what they have been learning about in school. We started things off by talking about our learning in English; they learned how to write a non-chronological report and they wrote one based on wolves. Some of the children reenacted how a wolf pack would hunt together to take down their prey. Next, they showed off their learning in Maths and how they have been measuring the perimeter of a shape. They then showed their beautiful artwork that they had created, using the technique of pointillism to create images of buildings in London. In Geography, the children spoke about how earthquakes and tsunamis are formed and how dangerous they can be. Finally, the children finished off the assembly by performing what they had learned in their music lessons, by playing “The best day of my life” on the ukulele. They performed really well and everyone was impressed with their assembly!

  

• GAV Workshop in Year 6

  We had a workshop with Growing against Violence (GAV).  This workshop built on what was discussed in our ‘So Social Media’ workshop that we had with them in year 5, and also the workshop that we had with Bob from Ambition, Aspire, Achieve, on being ‘Streetwise’. We worked on a definition of what a friend is, thought about how ‘gang’ members can appear like a friend but do not fall into the worked definition and heard from real life experiences of people who had formerly been gang members.

  

• Children's Mental Health Week

  The theme for Children's Mental Health Week 2026 is 'This is My Place', and our aim is to support the systems around children and young people to help them feel they belong. Children's Mental Health Week takes place every February. It was started in 2015 to give a voice to all children and young people and to raise awareness of children and young people's mental health.

  Across school this week in our PSHCE lessons, we have been learning and talking about the places we feel most comfortable in. It was a lot of fun because we made posters about what we enjoyed. This lesson made us feel welcome because it was very quiet and calming.

• Healthy Living Workshops

  Earlier today, we attended a workshop, run by medical students. We learnt about the healthy and unhealthy elements in our diet.  We also learnt that we should eat five portions of vegetables and fruit a day and drink 6-8 glasses of water. We also found out that white chocolate is unhealthier than milk or dark chocolate since white chocolate is fully artificial.This can affect your teeth and lead to diabetes. Also blue light on a screen is harmful, as it can affect your eyes.

• NSPCC Number Day Celebrations

  We had a wonderful time today celebrating Number Day across school. Children and staff came dressed up as numbers, while parents/carers enjoyed the morning in class with their children, participating in a range of number related activities. Later, all children showed off their baking skills in creating the sweetest treats imaginable! These will be sold after school today in the main hall after school, along with baked goods donated by our parents. All money raised will be donated to the NSPCC. 

  

• Year 2 Visits the Science Museum

  Year 2 enjoyed an exciting visit to the Science Museum to support their learning in science. During the trip, the children explored hands-on exhibits that helped them develop their understanding of everyday materials and living things. They observed how different materials are used for different purposes, learned about the needs of living things and explored parts of the human body through interactive displays. This visit really allowed the children to make clear links between their classroom learning and real-world science experiences.

  

• NSPCC Number Day - Friday 6th February

  Don't forget that this Friday, 6th February, we will be celebrating NSPCC Number Day! It is a maths inspired day and a great way to fundraise and celebrate maths! Here is how we will be celebrating here at Sir John Heron:

  • Digit Dress up: All children can come into school dressed as a number. We kindly request a £1 donation, if you are able to do so, which will go to the charity NSPCC. 
  • Parent’s invitation: We would like to invite all parents to join us from 9.00am - 9.45am in class to take part in maths activities with your children. Please wait at the main office (access via School Road) where a member of staff will take you into the school premises. For health and safety reasons, we ask for all buggies to be left outside and small children need to be carried into the building.
  • Cake sale! After school there will be a cake sale taking place in the main hall. The children will be making cakes throughout the day to sell. Please come along and buy a cake but remember to bring change! 

  To help with our cake sale, we kindly request for any donations of cakes/sweet treats. These can be baked at home or shop bought. If you are baking at home please could you provide an ingredients list. We would greatly appreciate your cake donations!  

   

  

• Year 6 Sharing Assembly

  This week, year 6 performed their sharing assembly to parents and carers. They confidently showcased the wonderful learning that has taken place in year 6 this term. 

  They shared facts about ‘The human body’ in science, they talked about ratio, algebra and decimals in mathematics, and shared a wonderful performance in English about a girl called Rose Blanche. For their art topic, they learned about a famous artist called Chris Ofili and spoke about one of his famous pieces of art work called ‘NO WOMAN NO CRY!'
