Remembrance Day
Fri 10 Nov 2023For Remembrance day this year, a ceremony was held at Manor Park Library and we were very fortunate to be invited as it is a very special occasion that has not been held locally for many years. Four of our wonderful prefects represented Sir John Heron Primary School at this event, in which it was our role to close the ceremony. Our children confidently delivered ‘The Act of Remembrance’ which was followed by a 2 minutes silence to remember all the soldiers who bravely fought in WW1 and WW2. We also read ‘The Kohima Epitaph’ after the whistle was blown, which signified the end of the 2 minutes silence. The ceremony was organised by Leslie Solomon, a passionate local resident, and in attendance were also the community neighbourhood officers and MP Stephen Timms. Our school was also presented with a certificate of appreciation and we were also able to place wooden sticks representing different faiths amongst the poppies to show the diversity of cultures and religions present in our local community.

Year 2 Visit St Michael and All Angels Church
Tue 07 Nov 2023Today Year 2 visited St Michael and All Angels Church in Manor Park. Children met Father Lee who is a priest at the Church. Father Lee was very impressed by the children’s knowledge and understanding of the parables they had learned in RE. Children were able to recall the parables of ‘The Lost Sheep’, ‘The Good Samaritan’ and ‘The Wise and Foolish Builders’. Father Lee then continued by talking through the Christmas story and discussed the importance of Jesus to Christians. He also talked through the nativity and is very excited to come and see Year 2 perform this at the end of the term. Children then had the opportunity to ask questions they were very curious about. We found out that there was a likely possibility that Jesus was 33 years old when he was crucified on the cross.

Prefects lead assembly on Armistice Day
Mon 06 Nov 2023Earlier today, some of our prefects led their first KS2 assembly. They talked about the significance of Armistice Day; a day for remembering the millions upon millions of soldiers and civilians killed during the First World War. It was delightful to see how they made use of skills from the Oracy framework such as making eye contact with the audience, adapting the tone of their voice and using precise language.

Swimming at the London Aquatics Centre!
Thu 02 Nov 2023This week, pupils in year 6 have embarked on a 2-week block of swimming lessons at the marvellous Aquatics Centre in Stratford, home to the 2012 London Olympic Games. Here is what Amrin in Silver class had to say about the sessions:
‘What I have learnt about swimming is that at first for me it was hard and I was nervous and I thought I was going to drown, but actually I managed to do it. It was really tough at first but I managed to get through my fears. Some people think it is really easy but actually a lot of them have managed to now see how hard it is for others’.
Year 6 will conclude their swimming lessons on Friday 10th November. Until then, best of luck to our fabulous Risk Taking Heroes!

Thursday Together in Reception
Thu 12 Oct 2023We had our first 'Thursday Together' session in Reception earlier today. It was wonderful to welcome so many parents/carers to our school! The focus of today's session was 'Fine-motor skills'; parents/carers first attended a session led by Ms Shah about the important of developing fine-motor skills in the Early Years, before they joined their children in class. Here, the children and their parents/carers joined in activities such as using tweezers to pick up water beads, tracing, threading pasta, making a play dough family, finger painting, and many more.
Some parents commented after the session:
'I like the idea of Red class mixing with Blue class, it gives my child the confidence to meet other children. Amazing outdoor play area!'
'It was nice to have information beforehand of what to expect. It was good to join in with the activities.'
'It's a very good idea to host such days for parents. I saw what great success my child has already achieved.'
'Thursday Together' will take place once a half term; keep checking the website for more information regarding dates!

Year 3 & 4 Maths Open Lesson
Wed 11 Oct 2023This morning we had a fantastic turn out for our maths open lessons in LKS2. Similarly to KS1, parents/carers had the opportunity to see and experience how we are taught, using the CPA approach (Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract). Some parents shared their experience after the lessons:
"I am really happy to have joined the maths lesson. It was very helpful to use when helping my child with homework."
"It was impressive to see how the learning takes place; it was not only maths taught, but encouraging children to interact with one another, use body language and socialising skills. Thank you!"

Black History Month in Year 6
Tue 10 Oct 2023As part of celebrating Black History Month, the pupils in year 6 have linked their art topic 'Cityscapes' with learning about Stephen Wiltshire. Stephen was born in London to West Indian parents on 24th April, 1974. As a child he was mute, and did not relate to other people. Aged three, he was diagnosed as autistic. He had no language and lived entirely in his own world. Stephen, who was always very much drawn to art, is now an outstanding artist, who has produced a number of masterful cityscape drawings. The pupils in year 6 made use of the current glorious weather to create factual posters about this exceptional artist.
