  • Stone Carving in Year5

    Thu 08 May 2025

This term, some children in year 5 had the opportunity to work with a stone mason to create pieces of art. In order to gather ideas, they visited local buildings such as the old Manor Park Library as well as a temple to make observations of the carvings used on these buildings. Back at school, they sketched their ideas for their carvings they would like to create. Following this, they went outside and started carving the process: they sketched the drawing onto the stone and then used chisels and hammers to help shape the stone. In the final session, they added the finishing touches and were very proud of their amazing work!

  • Year 1's Visit to Valentine's Park

    Thu 08 May 2025

Year 1 students visited Valentine’s Park as part of their science learning to explore trees and plants throughout the changing seasons. By returning to the park in autumn, winter, spring, and summer, the children were able to observe how trees and plants change over time. They noticed differences in leaf colour, plant growth, and the presence of flowers or seeds in each season. This hands-on experience helped them understand seasonal changes in the natural world and supported their learning about the life cycles of plants. The regular visits encouraged curiosity and observation skills.

  • Green Street Survey in Year 5

    Fri 25 Apr 2025

Earlier today, year 5 took to Green Street to carry out some geography fieldwork in the form of a traffic survey. They did this to support their learning in answering the very important question; ‘Should the highstreet be closed for traffic?’. Pupils considered the following modes of transport: bus, car, van, motorbike and bicycle. Upon arrival, they positioned themselves safely on the pavement and started taking a tally, noting down which modes of transport they could see in a given amount of time. Next week they will analyse this data and think about the issues this analysis might reveal.

  • Year 2 Visit to Valentine's Park

    Thu 24 Apr 2025

Year 2 students took part in an educational visit to Valentine’s Park as part of their science curriculum focused on trees and plants. During the trip, the children explored the park’s natural environment, identifying a variety of common trees and plants. They examined different parts of plants, such as leaves, stems, and roots, and discussed their functions. The visit provided a hands-on opportunity to observe seasonal changes and understand how plants grow and survive in their habitats.

  • Coffee Morning-Wellbeing for Children

    Thu 24 Apr 2025

The focus of our coffee morning today was on wellbeing for children. The session drew attention to children's wellbeing playing a crucial role in their physical and mental health, impacting their development, learning, and overall quality of life. A strong foundation of wellbeing helps children thrive in school, build healthy relationships, and develop resilience to cope with challenges. Families were given information about why children's wellbeing is so important and the impact on various aspects of life as detailed below.

Positive Impact on Development and Learning:

    • Engaged in Learning:

Children with good wellbeing are more likely to be engaged in learning, attend school regularly, and achieve academically.

    • Develop Key Life Skills:

Wellbeing supports the development of social and emotional skills, which are essential for success in life.

    • Future Outcomes:

Good mental health and wellbeing can lead to better longer-term outcomes, such as future employment and overall well-being in adulthood.

Impact on Mental and Physical Health:

    • Resilience:

Wellbeing allows children to develop the resilience to cope with stress and adversity, promoting healthy emotional development.

    • Positive Relationships:

Wellbeing supports the development of positive relationships with peers, family, and adults.

    • Reduced Stress and Anxiety:

Promoting wellbeing can help reduce stress, anxiety, and other mental health issues, contributing to overall well-being.

Importance of a Safe and Supportive Environment:

    • Feeling Loved and Supported:

Children need to feel loved, cared for, and supported by their family and community.

    • Sense of Safety:

A sense of safety, both physically and emotionally, is essential for children's wellbeing.

    • Safe Spaces:

Access to safe places for play, recreation, and social interaction is important.

Parents and guardians left the session well informed about what they can do to positively impact the wellbeing for their children and how they can contribute to this on a day to day basis.

  • NSPCC Speak Out Stay Safe

    Tue 22 Apr 2025

Today, KS1 and KS2 took part in a NSPCC programme: Speak out Stay safe. This is a safeguarding programme for children aged 5 to 11 years old and is available to all primary schools in the UK and Channel Islands. It helps children understand:

    • abuse in all its forms and how to recognise the signs of abuse
    • that abuse is never a child’s fault and they have the right to be safe
    • where to get help and the sources of help available to them.

We are committed to safeguarding the children at Sir John Heron.

  • Earth Day at SJH!

    Tue 22 Apr 2025

On Earth Day we had the pleasure of being taught by our wonderful MPs, who meticulously planned and delivered immersive lessons across the whole school. Our focus was about the sustainability of our Earth and the lessons were educationally and practically engaging for our pupils. We had a variety of activities that were thought-provoking and helped encourage our children to participate and engage with the learning. We also had a workshop delivered by the Mother Nature Company, which taught our children about appreciating the diversity of birds around our planet and their habitats.

  • Mini London Marathon

    Tue 22 Apr 2025

We are very excited to announce that a group of our pupils will be representing us on Saturday 26th April at the Mini London Marathon! We will have representatives in two races; the mile as well as the 2.6km. These will take place at 10.23am (2.6km) and 2.25pm (mile) around St James' Park near Buckingham Palace (please see attached route maps). We would like to invite our families to support our budding athletes on this very special day.
