Family Friday- Gross Motor Skills
Fri 19 May 2023This morning we had a fantastic turn out for our Family Friday session on gross motor skills. Gross motor skills play a crucial role in a child's overall development, including their physical, cognitive, and social-emotional growth. In the context of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), the development of gross motor skills is highly significant. Here are some key reasons why gross motor skills are important in the EYFS:
-
Physical Development: Gross motor skills involve the coordination of large muscle groups and the ability to control body movements. By developing these skills, children enhance their strength, balance, coordination, and overall physical fitness. This lays a foundation for various physical activities throughout their lives, such as sports, dance, and recreational pursuits.
-
Cognitive Development: Gross motor skills contribute to cognitive development by improving brain function and neural connections. As children engage in physical activities, they develop spatial awareness, body awareness, and a sense of cause and effect. These skills form the basis for understanding concepts like distance, speed, and force. Additionally, physical play and movement stimulate the brain, leading to enhanced concentration, problem-solving abilities, and memory.
-
Social and Emotional Development: Gross motor skills enable children to participate in group activities, interact with peers, and develop social relationships. Activities like team sports or group games encourage cooperation, communication, and teamwork. Children also learn about sharing, taking turns, and respecting others' personal space. Through physical play, they gain self-confidence, develop a positive self-image, and regulate their emotions.
-
Sensorimotor Integration: Gross motor skills are closely linked to the development of sensory processing and integration. As children engage in various movements and physical activities, they receive sensory input from their environment and learn to interpret and respond to it. This integration of sensory information with motor skills helps children to navigate and interact with the world effectively.
-
Overall Well-being: Active participation in gross motor activities promotes a healthy lifestyle and physical fitness from an early age. Regular physical exercise helps prevent sedentary habits, obesity, and related health issues. Furthermore, physical activity stimulates the release of endorphins, which enhance mood, reduce stress, and contribute to overall well-being.
We had a fantastic time taking part in various gross motor activities.

Year 5 DT visitor
Sun 14 May 2023On Friday, the pupils in Maroon and Turquoise classes worked with a second year Product Design student from UAL Central Saint Martins, Jess Lee. Jess showed the pupils some of the projects she has worked on and talked through the relevance of having a design brief. She then assisted the pupils in creating their own design briefs, based on their DT topic; 'Musical Instruments'. It was great for Year 5 to work with somebody from the DT industry!

The school was decorated with colourful banners and streamers in honor of the occasion, and pupils were dressed in red, white and blue. The day was filled with a range of activities inked to the King’s coronation, for example, painting portraits of King Charles III, making crowns, decorating bunting and making coronation plates. In the afternoon everyone in school had a class tea party, where children enjoyed sandwiches, cake and fruit to mark this momentous occasion!
